LADAKH SCOUTS REGIMENT DOMINATES KHARDUNG LA CHALLENGE (72 KM) AND LADAKH MARATHON (42 KM & 21 KM)

The Ladakh Marathon is the highest and amongst the toughest marathons conducted in the world. Of the four races in this event, the Khardung La Challenge (5370m) is the world's highest Ultra Marathon, covering a distance of 72 km which tests the limits of human endurance. Besides this, the Ladakh Marathon and Half Marathon are also considered extremely challenging, given the altitude (3500m above sea level) and terrain in which they are conducted.

The 8th edition of Ladakh Marathon was organised at Leh from 06-08 September 2019, under the aegis of RIMO Expeditions, Leh. The event witnessed a large participation from athletes of various nationalities and age groups from across the globe.

The LADAKH SCOUTS Regiment of Indian Army continued their winning streak in this prestigious event this year also. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions in the 72 km “Khardung La Challenge” were bagged by Rifleman Shabbir Hussain (6:53:34), Rifleman Stanzin Norboo (6:53:39) and Rifleman Rigzin Norbu (6:54:31). In the 42 km Ladakh Marathon, the 1st, 2nd and 4th positions were secured by Rifleman Shabir Hussain (2:56:50), Rifleman Jigmat Norboo (02:58:57) and Rifleman Ajaz Hussain (3:19:18) while in the 21 km Half Marathon, the 5th and 6th positions were secured by Rifleman Rigzin Gyurmeth (01:23:58) and Rifleman Sangays Dorjey (01:25:50) respectively.

Proving their mettle in this unique high altitude run which is a test of the mental and physical endurance of the participants over a grueling distance of 72 / 42 / 21 kms, at an altitude of more than 11000 ft, the LADAKH SCOUTS Regiment runners re-established their supremacy by achieving podium finishes. This commendable achievement and the perseverance displayed by these athletes has been exceptional and has earned laurels for the Regiment and the Indian Army.
